Myrtle Eleanor Hash passed away Tuesday, 20 Sep 2005, at Richfield Convalescent Center, Salem, Virginia, the youngest and last living of 10 siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peyton and Emma Grubb Hash; brothers, Earl, Gentry, Eugene, James, and Lewis Hash; sisters, Helen Barton, Lena Hash, Fannie Hash, and Shirley Myers.
Myrtle was born 16 Sep 1917 in Smyth County, Virginia (Myrtle Elma Hash in her 1917 birth record). She moved with her family from Grayson County, Virginia to Salem, Roanoke County, Virginia sometime between 1920 and 1930. She attended Andrew Lewis High School in Salem where she was captain and played center on the 1936 Roanoke County championship girls' basketball team. She also played on the girls' baseball team.
Myrtle enlisted 1 Apr 1943 at Richmond, Virginia. She served in World War II as a Corporal in the US Women's Army Corps from Sep 1943 to Nov 1945, and was stationed in London, England. She returned 9 Nov 1945 to New York City on the Queen Mary for separation at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
Myrtle worked for 33 years for the National Labor Relations Board Legal Staff. She was Office Manager of the Atlanta, Georgia branch when she retired in 1979. She served as Vice President of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Atlanta.
Myrtle was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Salem. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Hazel Grubb Hash of Salem; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, 9 East Church Avenue, Roanoke, Virginia 24011. A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, 4 Oct 2005 at 12 noon at Knollwood Apartments, Richfield Retirement Complex, Salem, Virginia.
