Bill Ladd Smith was born in Augusta, Maine. His father, a mechanical engineer, moved often until around the 1950's or 1960's. They settled in Tucker, Georgia (in Atlanta) and Bill was an excellent student and baseball athlete. He went to college at Oglethorpe University and married Angela Katherine Snider. They moved to Waycross where their only child together, Cynthia Denise Smith was born. After their divorce Bill eventually moved back to Atlanta, where he met the love of his life, Judy Diane Pollard. They had a daughter, Lillian Nicole Smith and they moved to Salt Lake City Utah, then to Nashville, then to Chattanooga, where they eventually divorced, but remained close friends.
He is survived by his ex-wives, Angela and Judy, his daughters, Cynthia Denise Holden Lloyd and Nicole Rush; his four grandchildren (in order of birth), Heather Katherine Eastin (nee Holden), Danny R. Holden, Jr. (often referred to as simply DJ), Alex and Ashton Rush. He is further survived by his sister Bonnie Stuart, his brother James Smith and his youngest sister, Lila Ware; and finally his son-in-law, Clay Lloyd.
He is beloved by family and friends. He was a nature lover and preferred being outdoors, he was an artist, a fisherman, a baseball fan and loved gardening. He will always be remembered for his intelligence and wit.
He died peacefully, but suddenly, at his daughter's home, in Douglasville, Georgia. His memorial service was held in Charlotte, North Carolina and his ashes were given to his family.
