He excelled in football and track and field during his years at Lampasas High School in Texas, and earned a spot on the United States Olympic track and field team. During the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal, Quebec, Canada he earned a gold medal in the men's 4 x 100 metres relay. He received a football scholarship from the University of Texas, and during his years with the Longhorns he established himself as one of the school's all-time greats. Additionally, he made a memorable impression in track and field, making himself one of Texas' best all-around athletes. Jones was selected by the New York Jets as the number 2 overall pick during the 1980 NFL Draft. He played for five seasons (1980 to 1984) in the National Football League at the wide receiver position with the Jets, and totaled 62 career regular season games. He caught a 47-yard touchdown pass in 1981 in a game against the Green Bay Packers which clinched a playoff berth for the Jets. After his football career, Jones struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. He died from cancer.
