Born David Lewis Marshall, he attended Lakewood High School in California followed by College of Sequoias and Long Beach City College. Selected by the Los Angeles Angels during the 1963 Amateur Draft, he was acquired by the San Francisco Giants in 1966 and made his Major League debut on September 7, 1967. He gradually experienced more playing time and in 1969, he became the Giants' primary left fielder, as he shared the outfield with Willie Mays and Bobby Bonds. In 490 career regular season games, he compiled 258 hits, with a .246 lifetime batting average. After retiring from baseball, he had ownerships and later worked in the security industry.
