Professional baseball player from 1871 to 1882. He began playing baseball in his hometown of Philadelphia in 1868. Beginning in 1871, he played eleven seasons for seven major league clubs including the Troy Haymakers, Philadelphia Athletics, Philadelphia White Stockings, St. Louis Brown Stockings, Providence Grays, Cleveland Blues, and Detroit Wolverines. He also served in the capacity of a player-manager for three of those clubs.
McGeary's strengths included his base running, stolen bases, and low number of strike outs. During six seasons between 1871 and 1876, he was at bat 1,518 times with only six strike outs. His primary positions were as catcher and infielder. The highest batting average achieved was .360.
His career was marred somewhat by persistent rumors of game fixing. He was suspended at one time, although charges were later dropped, and he was reinstated due to lack of substantiation.
