Edward ‘Ed’ Schnittjer, 85, of Clarion, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines.

Private graveside services will be held on Monday, August 12, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Evergreen Cemetery, Highway 3 East in Clarion, with Pastor Ron Lotz officiating.

Edward Schnittjer was born on March 7, 1934 to Dick and Anna (Groothoff) Schnittjer. Growing up, Ed painted houses and barns with his dad.

On December 3, 1956, Ed was united in marriage to Helen Pals in Sheffield. The couple made their home south of Clarion where they raised their three children.

Ed farmed in the Clarion area for 63 years before he retired. He built and modified farm equipment in his earlier faming days. In his spare time he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and you could always find him with a farm magazine or his Bible in his hand. His family was most important to him. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and going out for supper with his brothers. Ed occasionally would carry a conversation in German with his siblings.

Ed is survived by his wife Helen of Clarion; three children, Judy (Steve) Haugland of Clarion, Duane (Staci) Schnittjer of Clarion, and Joan (Troy) Hill of Clarion; six grandchildren, Angela (Jeremy) Fishman of Peoria, AZ, Aaron (Stephanie) Haugland of Dania Beach, FL, Colton (Lissa Duer) Hill of Beatrice, NE, Halie (Daniel Ballard) Hill of Hampton, and Cole and Jake Schnittjer of Clarion; two great-grandchildren, Conner and Emma Fishman of Peoria, AZ; five siblings, Eunice (Merle) Van Gerpen of Webster City, Esther Keller of Blairsburg, Herbert Schnittjer of Eagle Grove, Lorraine (Jerry) Sheffield of Ames, and Harold (Barbara) Schnittjer of Webster City; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Richard (Greta) Schnittjer; infant brother Herbert Schnittjer; sister Ruth Schnittjer; and brother-in-law Wayne Keller.
