For ten seasons (1947 to 1956), he played at the outfielder and third baseman positions with the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies. Born in Gridley, California, he attended Christian Brothers High School in California. He earned a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers during a tryout camp in 1940 and played two years of Minor League ball, before his military service during World War II. He played in the Pacific Coast League and was acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1946. He made his Major League debut on April 15, 1947 and played in 112 games that year. In 1949, he topped the 100 RBI mark with 104 and produced the first of three consecutive seasons of 20 or more home runs. In 1951, he achieved all star status as he split time between Pittsburgh and St. Louis. Westlake experienced an American League Pennant winning season with Cleveland in 1954 and appeared in 2 games during the 1954 World Series. In 958 career regular season games, he compiled 848 hits, with a lifetime .272 batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked in the construction industry.
