Born Robert George Del Greco, he was signed as an amateur free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1950. He made his Major League debut with Pittsburgh on April 16, 1952 and played in 99 games that year. He spent the next eight years in and out of the Major League, before becoming the Phillies starting centerfielder for the 1960 season. In 1961, he produced a career high 84 hits as he split time between Philadelphia and Kansas City. In 731 career regular season games, he compiled 454 hits with a .229 batting average.
