Richard enlisted 20 Apr 1861 in Prince George County at age 27 as a Private and served in Mullins' Regiment, Fourth Virginia Cavalry.
Richard was a farmer in Prince George County. He and Mary Ella raised 8 children.

After Mary Ella died in 1883, some of the family probably moved to Luzerne County, Pennsylvania between 1883 and 1888. According to his Civil War Soldier profile, Richard died in 1888 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County. An 1889 Pittston (Luzerne County) newspaper story mentioned son Richard H. Peterson of Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, a former resident of Pittston, who had returned to Pittston to visit relatives including his sister Mrs. J. A. Thomas. A 1905 Pittston newspaper story mentioned daughter Cornelia Peterson who was planning an extended trip south with a brief stop to visit her brother Herbert Peterson in Hinton, West Virginia.
Cornelia and Ella probably died prior to Sarah who died in 1921. Sarah's obituary does not mention either sister as a survivor.
