Major League Baseball Umpire. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was originally a minor league catcher who briefly played in the farm system of the hometown Phillies. After his playing career ended, he began umpiring games in and around the Philadelphia area to stay close to the game. Eventually joining the staff of the National League, he would work over 3,000 games between 1956 and 1975. A founding member of the umpires' union, he worked three World Series, two NL Championship Series and three All-Star games during his career, and was known as a fair and competent umpire, using a slow, deliberate style to call balls and strikes. He once ejected Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver during the 1969 World Series for arguing. He was the father of Major League Baseball umpire Jerry Crawford and National Basketball Association referee Joey Crawford.
