Thomas L. Bird was born in 1867 in McDowell County, North Carolina, the son of Wilson Lee Bird and Mary M. Wilson. Thomas was enumerated with his parents and younger sister Sarah Bird (born about 1869) for the 1870 McDowell County census. Thomas was enumerated with his parents for the 1880 McDowell County census.

Thomas married Laura M. Coxey in 1886 in McDowell County, and they had 6 children, 5 of whom were still living for the 1900 Rutherford County, North Carolina census.

Thomas probably died between 1900 and 1902 when Laura remarried.

Children:
1- Charles Lee Byrd (1887-1964) married Josephine Dodson Haythe (1896-1983) married Ida Morene (1899-1986).
2- John Garland Byrd, Sr. (1889-1965) married Katie Louise Robinson (1894-1985).
3- Nora Ann Bird (1891-1982) married Robert Lee Clayton (1892-1944).
4- Robert Lee Byrd, Sr. (1894-1954) married Emma Mills (1896-1970).
5- Gladdis Bird (1898- ).
