Major League Baseball Player. For eleven seasons (1946 to 1956), he played in the outfield (mainly left field) with the Washington Senators, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox and New York Giants. Born Gilbert Fitzgerald Coan, he attended Brevard College, prior to being signed as an amateur free agent by the Washington Senators in 1944. He made his Major League debut on April 27, 1946 and played in 59 games with Washington that year. In spite of missing a left thumb (he lost it due to an infection when he was ten years old), Coan went on to have a productive offensive career including two seasons in which he batted over .300 (1950 and 1951). In 1951, he produced a career- high 163 hits. He was acquired by Baltimore and earned the distinction of recording the first hit in Orioles’ history following the team’s relocation from St. Louis in 1954. In 918 career regular season games, he compiled 731 hits with a .254 lifetime batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked in the insurance industry.
