Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. For twenty-two seasons (1953 to 1974), he played in the outfield (mainly right field) and first base man positions with the Detroit Tigers. born Albert William Kaline, he made his initial impression on the baseball diamond as a standout player during his years at Southern High School in Baltimore. Signed as a amateur free agent (bonus baby) by the Detroit Tigers in 1953, he made his Major League debut at the age of eighteen on June 25, 1953. The following year (1954), he secured the starting right fielder position and in 1955, he led the league with 200 hits and won the batting title with his .340 average. During the course of his career, Kaline achieved all star status an astonishing eighteen times. In addition to his exceptional hitting, he was a force with his glove and was the recipient of ten Gold Glove Awards. He experienced a world championship with the 1968 Detroit Tigers and during the 1968 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Kaline hit two home runs and batted .379. In 2,834 career regular seasons, he amassed 3,007 hits, with a .297 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, he remained with the Tigers' organization and served as a longtime color analyst on TV broadcasts from 1976 until 2001. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980. The same year, the Detroit Tigers retired his uniform number six.
