Major League Baseball Player. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his major league career started with the Chicago Cub on April 12, 1965 when he was 24. He played there from 1965 until 1973 then went on to the San Diego Padres for one year before being released. In his 11 year professional career he had 1,473 hits, in 5023 at bats and 22 home runs. He attended Perry Traditional Academy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was named All-City in baseball and basketball, and graduated in 1958. The he attended Allegheny College where he was drafted as a free agent by the Boston Red Sox in 1962, then selected by Chicago Cubs from Red Sox in the first-year minor league draft. He was a 4-time All-Star, and in 1968 won the National League Gold Glove Award for second baseman.
