Cristobal Torriente was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006 for his accomplishments in the Negro Leagues from 1914-1928. He was also elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame's inaugural 1939 class. Torriente had a career batting average of .339 in the Negro Leagues and a record .350 in the Cuban Winter Leagues.
Later in his life, Torriente fell victim to alcoholism, leading to extreme poverty in his final years. These harsh conditions exposed him to tuberculosis, which conquered the mighty slugger at age 44.
