Founder of the Utopian Hopedale Community beginning in 1841. In 1842, he and his followers moved into the "Old House in The Dale", a section of Milford, and began their experiment of communal living, seasoned with the radical concepts of abolitionism, temperance, women's rights and non-violence. The Community ended in 1856 when Ebenezer and George Draper withdrew their investment which amounted to about three-fourths of the Community assets. Ballou remained in Hopedale as the Unitarian minister for the rest of his life. He did an extensive amount of writing in his lifetime, including his History of Milford, History of the Hopedale Community, an autobiography, and the massive Ballou genealogy.
