Born into a musical family from Portland, Maine, John Knowles Paine was the first American composer to have a work performed in Europe, Mass in D, and the first American to write a symphony, Azara.
He settled in Boston in 1861 and was appointed the first organist and choirmaster of Harvard College. He later was appointed America's first music professor. He continued to serve as faculty member until his retirement in 1905. Harvard named its concert hall after him.∼Prof. Paine was the director of the musical department of Harvard University since 1875, and a well known composer and authority of music. He was the son of Jacob S Paine who was born in Standish Maine. He died suddenly of pneumonia with diabetes mellitus a contributing factor, at his home at 23 Hawthorne street.
