Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Ware, Massachusetts, he was a right handed pitcher nicknamed ‘Candy', noted as the pioneer first to throw a curveball. On April 22, 1872, he made his debut with the New York Mutuals and also played as an outfielder. For seven seasons he played for the New York Mutuals in 1872, Baltimore Canaries in 1873, Philadelphia White Stockings in 1874, Hartford Dark Blues (1875-76) and Cincinnati Reds in 1877. Among his records, he was the first pitcher to record two complete games in one day and became the first President of the new International Association for Professional Baseball Players. As a player, he ended his career with 145wins, 94 loss, 233 complete games, 19 shutouts, 259 strikeouts and a 2.42 earned run average. He died at age 75 in Toledo, Ohio and was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee in 1939.
