Legendary shogi (Japanese chess) master. Sakata was born into a poor family and became so obsessed with the game of shogi during his childhood that he did not accomplish much schooling and was essentially illiterate. Due to his exceptional skills, his name became nearly synonymous with the game. He was posthumously awarded the title of "Meijini" (Grand Champion) and "Oshoi" (King) by the Japan Shogi Association in 1955. He was portrayed by actor Ryutaro Tatsumi in the biographical movie, "Osho Ichidai" (1955). He was also portrayed by actor Rentaro Mikuni in the movies "Osho" (1962) and "Zoku Osho" (1963).
