Composer. Born in London, he entered the Royal Academy of Music in 1829, later becoming a professor there. In 1875 he was elected the Academy's Principal. His most popular works include the "Chevy Chace Overture" (1836), "The Devil's Opera" (1838), and his "Romeo and Juliet" overture. In addition to his operatic works he wrote a series of oratorios and several symphonies, the best known of which are the Fourth and the Seventh. He was knighted in 1883.
