Actor. He will be best remembered for his role as the ill-fated astronaut 'Lieutenant Thomas Dodge' in film director Franklin J. Schaffner's adventure-science fiction film classic, "Planet Of The Apes" (1968). His character was captured and later stuffed and put on display in the ape's museum where Charlton Heston's character 'George Taylor' later finds him. The film which was released by Twentieth Century Fox on April 3, 1968, also starred Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, James Daly, Woodrow Parfrey, and Robert Gunner as 'John Landon,' told the story of an astronaut crew who crash-lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved. He was born John Alexander Jones in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Pleasant Jones and Helen Church Jones and later served eleven years of military service in the United States Army where he received the rank of Captain. Following his military service, he pursued an acting career and began acting in theatrical stock. He then appeared on television using the stage name of Jeff Burton beginning in the early 1960s making his debut in an episode entitled, "Hot Potato a La Hazel" of the television series, "Hazel" in which he played the role of a policeman in 1964.
