Major League Baseball Player. For twelve seasons (1954 and 1956 to 1966), he played at the first base and right fielder positions with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators. Born Joseph Robert Cunningham, Jr., his initial impact on the baseball diamond was during his years at Lodi High School in New Jersey. Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1949, he made his Major League debut on June 30, 1954. His Minor League career was interrupted while he served with the United States Military during the Korean War. In 1959, he produced a career high 158 hits and a .345 batting average as he led the league with a .453 On-Base-Percentage, while achieving all star status. In 1,141 career regular season games, he compiled 980 hits, with a .291 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, he served as a Minor League manager and worked in the front office for the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1982, he served as a coach on Whitey Herzog's staff with the Cardinals' team who won the World Series.
