She played under the name Joan Berger, entered the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) as a right fielder in 1951 with the Rockford Peaches, where she played her entire career. In the first year she played in only 40 games, but she still managed to post a .251 batting average. The following year she was moved to second base and managed to retain her rookie status. That year because of her outstanding abilities she was named Rookie of The Year and she was also the only rookie that made the leagues All-Star Team. In 1953 she split her time between shortstop and second. In 1954, the final season for the AAGPBL she once again split her time between third and second. This year she posted her career best batting average of .280. The Peaches made the playoffs in 1951, 1952 and 1953 but never managed to win a championship. She is part of the permanent display at the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum at Cooperstown, New York.
