Poet, Novelist. Born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England, she was the eldest of ten children born to a wealthy banker and shipping merchant, William Ingelow and his Scots wife, Jean. She began her career at a very young age and had many verses and tales published under the pen name Orris. Her first volume, A Rhyming Chronicle of Incidents and Feelings, was published anonymously, but not until she was thirty years of age. It impressed another Lincolnshire poet, Alfred Tennyson who remarked, "Miss Ingelow, I do declare you do the trick better than I do". She was to become Tennyson's lifelong friend. She followed this with another book of verse in 1851 which also contained a story, Allerton and Dreux. However, it was not until 1863 when she published Poems, that she was to gain fame and become a popular writer. Poems went through more than thirty editions and was set to music and gained even more fame, including great fame in the United States. Between 1872 and 1879, Jean also published several successful novels. She never married, but was rumored to have received a proposal from a fellow poet and was linked with Robert Browning for a number of years after the death of his wife Elizabeth Barrett Browning. She was concerned with the poor of England and use income from her royalties to host dinners three times a week to feed some of them.
