Runyan was the son of a Methodist minister. He became a Methodist minister at 21 and held various pastorates in Kansas, 1891-1903. He was appointed evangelist for the Central Kansas Methodist Conference. He also showed an interest in music at a very young age and was church organist by age 12. He wrote his first Gospel song in 1915. In 1924 he went to John Brown Universitym Siloan Springs, Arkansas and served as pastor of the Federated Church and editor of Christian Worker's Magazine. He than moved to Chicago, Il where he was associated with the Moody Press and served as editor for Hope Publishing Company until his retirement in 1948. In 1948 he received an honorary Doctor of Letters from Wheaton, Il.
