Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was a premier ballplayer whose slogan was "Keep your eye clear, and hit 'em where they ain't." Nicknamed "Wee Willie', he made his debut as an outfielder for the New York Giants on September 30, 1892. In 19 seasons from 1892 to 1910, he hit over .400 once, twice led his league in batting average and three times in hits. In 1897, he had a 44-game hitting streak, a record that has been only broken once. He ended his career with 2,932 hits, only 36 strikeouts, 810 runs batted in, 1,719 runs scored and a .341 batting average. He died on New Year's Day 1922 at his home in Brooklyn as a result of chronic endocarditis, which he suffered from the last five years of his life. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame at its opening in 1939.
