John F. Mayfield, was born February 12, 1845 in Pickens County, South Carolina. He was the 2nd son born to Isaiah & (possibly Anne S. Calhoun) Mayfield.
In 1854, the Mayfield family moved from Pickens County, South Carolina to Upshur County Texas, where they remained citizens of the county for the rest of their lives.
J. F. probably worked on the family's farm up until the War between the States. He enlisted with the Confederate Army sometime between February & May of 1862 and served as a private with Company K of the 34th Texas Calvary, Col Terrell's Regiment. He participated in many battles with his unit, including the Battle at Mansfield in De Soto Parish, Louisiana on April 6, 1864.
Serving till the end of the war, he was dismissed at Porter Bluff on the Trinty River in Texas. He returned home to become a farmer, music teacher, song writer & social leader.
In 1867, John F. married Margaret Ellen White, daughter of James Rufus & Cynthia MOBLEY White. To this union were born 2 sons, Rufus Anderson, born October 18,1868 & Robert Burton, born about 1871.

I am now 72 years of age. I have been a citizen of Upshur County, Texas, since 1854. I began teaching & writing vocal music at the age of 35. I became associated with THE TRIO MUSIC COMPANY of Waco, Texas, in 1900, being one of the authors of "HAPPY NEWS." Since then I have been one of the authors of the following: " THE GOSPEL GLEANER," "REAPER SONGS," "HOSANNAS TO THE KING NO. 2," and "THE SONG HARVEST." During this time I have issued several sheet songs and have owned stock in the Company a part of the time.
Yours very truly, J.F. Mayfield
