Pioneer in a Cardiac Procedure. She was born premature with a diagnosis of fatal heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome; with this defect, the left part of the heart is not formed or only partially formed. At the age of 12-days-old, she under went major surgery of a a xenotransplant procedure, receiving the heart of a baboon. At first she improved, but after two weeks, she started to decline and died 21 days post-op the surgery. She went into kidney failure and had organ rejections problems. Being the first, there were some concerns about the medical ethics of doing this procedure. Dr. Leonard Bailey was the cardiac surgeon that preformed the operation at Loma Linda University Medical Center; he performed the first successful infant heart transplant the following year, in 1985. This infant was the pioneer patient in a new era of heart transplants.
