142 Squadron's Vickers Wellingon III (#BK281) bomber aircraft, with an aicrew of five, took off from RAF Grimsby for a night-time air operation over Aachen, Germany. On the return flight to England following the operation, BK281 flew into poor weather conditions, making the visibility difficult. The Wellington crashed near Princetown on Dartmoor, taking the lives of four members of the crew and injuring one.
The airmen who perished in this accident were-
RAFVR Sergeant Edward Henry BASTOW,
RAFVR Sergeant James BENNIE,
RCAF Flying Officer George Hammond EDGETT and
RAFVR Sergeant Rene Laughton PARTINGTON.
