Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. For fourteen seasons (1930 to 1943), he was a left-handed pitcher with the New York Yankees and Washington Senators. Born Vernon Louis Gomez, he attended Richmond High School and marked his Major League debut with the Yankees on May 29th, 1930. During the course of his career, he exceeded 20-wins four-times and achieved pitcher's triple crown status twice (1934 with 26 wins, 158 strikeouts and a 2.33 ERA and 1937 with 21 wins, 194 strikeouts and a 2.33 ERA). Gomez was a key contributor on five Yankees' world championship teams (1932, 1937 to 1939), as he compiled a perfect 6 win 0 loss record, with 31 strikeouts and a 2.86 ERA in 50 innings pitched. In 368 career regular season games, Gomez amassed a 189 win, 102 loss record, with a 3.34 lifetime ERA, in 2,503 innings pitched. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
