Born György Mikes in the Hungarian village of Siklos, George Mikes became a journalist, working for a Hungarian Newspaper. In 1938, he was sent to London where he was meant to stay for a few weeks only, however, he soon became used to the British way of life an stayed there for the rest of his life.

George Mikes works include both biographies about real people as well as funny books about the character of the British and their way of life, describing all that in an exaggerated way, which made everybody who read his books both smile but also love the British.

His probably most famous book about that is the masterpiece HOW TO BE AN ALIEN (1946) which to this day is a popular novel for pupils learning English all over the world.
