Ellen Magda Jones-Heer, 92, passed away on June 18, 2005 at Farmington Square in Salem. Ellen was born in Portland to Peter and Ane Pedersen Nielsen just three months after they arrived in the United States from Denmark. Ellen and her family attempted to purchase tickets to come to America on the Titanic but thank heavens the tickets were "sold out" so the family purchased tickets for an earlier voyage on another ship. After her father's death in the state of Washington, at a very young age Ellen returned to Denmark with her mother and younger brother Fieldborg, where the children received all their formal education. Their mother left them with relatives in Denmark while she came back to the United States to live with family memebers, learn to speak English and find a job.The family returned to the United States in 1928 and again settled in the Portland area where Ellen met and married Victor Jones and together they raised three children in Portland.
In the early 1950's Ellen and Victor moved to the Dallas, Oregon area. Ellen had a variety of work experiences in her lifetime, including positions with Guys Hardware in Dallas, Oregon and as a knitting instructor at Meier and Frank in Salem. She was an avid horsewoman, and along with her husband belonged to the Multnomah County and Washington County Mounted Posse and participated in many horse shows in her younger years. She was an expert seamstress and tailor with a closet full of clothes and "designs by Ellen". She was a member of Pythian Sisters and Fraternal Order of Eagles and loved dancing, enjoying everything from square and round dancing to ballroom and western swing. Ellen loved to travel, returning to Denmark and Germany several times for visits to relatives, traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico with her first husband and going on several cruises with her second husband.
Preceding her in passing were her sister Amy, her brother Feldborg "Ray", her first husband Victor H. Jones and her second husband Lawrence G. Heer. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, nine grandchildren, along with several great and great-great-grandchildren.
