Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Berkeley, California, he was an outfielder making his debut for the St. Louis Cardinals on August 28, 1924. For thirteen seasons, he played with the St. Louis Cardinals (1924-31) and Cincinnati Reds (1932-35, 1937). He was a member of the World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals in (1926, 1931), was the NL Batting Champion with a .349 average in 1931 and was selected to the NL All-Star team in 1933. He finished his career with a batting average of .317, 164 home runs, 777 runs scored and 833 runs batted in. In 1971, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee. He died at age 70 in Calistoga, California.
