The company became the major publishing house of the Boston area, working with notable authors like Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. The company later evolved into Houghton Mifflin. Fields purchased "The Atlantic Monthly" in 1861 and served as the journal's editor for a time.
