Lutheran pastor at Quakertown, PA 1874-1893.
Organized the Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse, Milwaukee, WI, serving as its rector 1893-1898.
He was a city missionary in Philadelphia, PA 1899-1930, serving as the superintendent of the Philadelphia City Mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church 1903-1930. He became a leader in prison reform work.
He composed a number of hymn tunes, carols, anthems and cantatas and was the author of a number of hymnals.
He contributed to the "Lutheran Cyclopedia" and "Encyclopedia of Missions". He authored a number of articles for church periodicals.
Muhlenberg College granted him an A.M. degree in 1874 (the same year he graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA) and a Mus.D. degree in 1893. He was granted an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Wittenberg College in 1921.
