LEON BECK
1896-1968

Leon Beck was born on February 15, 1896 in Alabama and grew up amid the influence of gospel singing as almost a part of one's education, even when quite young. Mr. Beck's yearning for a better knowledge of music lead him on to study at the Eureka Norma School and under such teachers as R.L. Page, S.O. Manor, Mr. Livingston, and many others. He also took correspondence courses and availed himself of all books possible in his study of theory, harmony, etc.

Mr. Beck was also a student of many singing schools and later taught about seventy-five schools. He has served as an officer in singing conventions for many years and his long years of work in this field have been very rewarding.

Leon Beck has written about two hundred gospel songs, both words and music. Some that he considered his most outstanding numbers are: "What A Happy Time," "The Lord is Good To Me," "I Won't Have To Cross Along," "I Feel Like Singing It," Lord, Open The Door For Me."

He has had songs published by most of the southern publishers, including the R.L. Page Music Company, Teachers Music Company, Hartford Music Company, O.A. Parris Music Company, The Tennessee Music Company, James D. Vaughn Music Company, Stamps Quartet Music Company and The Convention Music Company.

Mr. Beck was the father of five children and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church where he served as choir director.

He continued writing gospel songs until his death in 1968.
