BLOOMINGTON — Alex Ackerman died in the Meadowood Health Pavilion on June 19.

She was born in Potsdam, Germany, on June 4, 1934, to Hans-Georg and Eva (von Behr) von Brackenhausen. When her father was killed in 1941, she became the foster child of Baron Carl and Baroness Erika von Schroeder, and at the end of World War II, her family fled out of Berlin from the oncoming Russian Army and settled in Hamburg.

After receiving her Abitur degree, Alex studied in Wiesbaden, where she received her degree and certification after two years. She then returned to Hamburg, where she did research in a laboratory for Lever Brothers. Alex loved sailing, astronomy, her many classmate friends, and she was very happy until she met this little guy wearing a French beret and love-bug boxer shorts — the two of them thrown together at a Mardi Gras party by a third person who didn't want Mr. Love Bug to cut in on his date. The little guy told Alex that she looked exactly like Leslie Caron, and they danced the night away — to the tune of "Rock Around the Clock," played over and over.

After untold ups and downs, Alex made the big decision to leave family and country, going to a place where love had called her. She worked as an au pair in Philadelphia, and the two were married in New York City's Union Theological Seminary on April 7, 1958. She then lived and worked in Manhattan during her husband's final seminary year. After that they moved to Cambridge, MA (3 years), Tuscaloosa, AL (4 years), New London, CT (3 years), and then to Bloomington, IN, in 1969. While she was in Bloomington, Alex served as a crossing guard and then as a school bus driver; she loved walking, reading and Will Shortz and his puzzles. She leaves behind hosts of friends, from the First Presbyterian Church Koinonia Circle, fellow players at the tennis courts, and especially her neighborhood bridge group.

Alex loved to travel, going often to visit her family in Germany and France, but also traveling with her husband for extended periods of time to Nara, Japan, Tucson, AZ, and Jerusalem. She also loved the sea, especially after living on the Connecticut side of Long Island Sound. Vacation trips almost always ended with her family on the beach, once in Padre Island, TX, but all the rest of the time in the Sanibel, FL, area.

Alex was the mother of four wonderful sons who have her undying love (Ben, 1959; Sam, 1960; Jeremy, 1963; and Joe, 1964, deceased). Survivors include her husband Jim; Ben and Janie (Fitzpatrick) Ackerman of Bloomington and their sons, Isaac James Ackerman and Joey Yung Hwan Ackerman; Sam Ackerman and Nancy Gibbons of Indianapolis; Jeremy and Annie (Clifford) Ackerman of Bloomington. Sisters: Anna Marie von Quast (Fahrenkrug, Germany), Anita Sabine von Diest (Helmstorf, Germany), Almuth Ontrup (Montauban, France), and brother Andreas von Brackenhausen (Berlin).

She was pre-deceased by one sister, Adelheid Giffin (Vancouver).

And once again, Alex has moved from family and country, going to a place where Greater Love has called her, profoundly missed by the many left behind who have loved her intensely.

Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Bloomington at 2 p.m., on Saturday, June 27, 2009.

Church and Community Funeral Services is handling the arrangements.
