Joseph was a son of Daniel Banvard and Elizabeth Mead. He was a Baptist minister, although associated with a Unitarian Church at the time of his death. After attending the South Reading Academy, he studied at the Newton Theological Institution, from which he was graduated in 1835. He received his Doctor of Divinity. He ministered in Boston (the Chelsea area), Pawtucket, and Salem MA, and in Rhode Island. The Boston Journal mortuary notice simply stated, "a well-known Baptist clergyman died at Neponset [a district within Boston, MA]... aged 77". He was a prolific writer of history and of religion. His youngest brother, John Banvard, was a well-known in his time scenic painter, and also authored some history books.
On September 30, 1887, his memorial service was held at Boston's Harvard Street Baptist Church, where he previously ministered.
