Baseball Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he was a left fielder making his debut for the Boston Beaneaters on July 27, 1891. For seasons, he played for the Boston Beaneaters (1891), Pittsburgh Pirates (1892), Baltimore Orioles (1892-98), Brooklyn Superbas (1899-1901), Baltimore Orioles (American League) (1902), Cincinnati Reds (1902-06) and Boston Doves (1908). A standout hitter and outfielder, he batted over .300 in eleven consecutive years, had five seasons with over a 100 runs batted in and once went a record-tying 9-for-9 in a doubleheader. He also led the Brooklyn Superbas to the National League pennant in 1900 and later managed the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Doves with a record of 338 wins, 321 losses. He finished his career with a record of 440 stolen bases, 2245 hits, 1425 runs scored, 65 home runs, 1194 runs batted in and a .321 batting average. He died at 71 in Baltimore, Maryland and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1971.
