Preacher and songwriter. He wrote, "Faith is the Victory" in 1891.

His parents were John and Elizabeth Yates who had emigrated from England. After attending Baravia Union School, John became a shoe seller, and in 1871, he became the local department manager for a hardware firm called E.L. & G. D. Kenyon Store. He worked there fifteen years before becoming editor of the local paper, a job he held for the next ten years. In 1897, John published his one and only book, "Poems and Ballads." He died three years later in Baravia on September 5, 1900. He wrote other hymns that are almost forgotten now but were popular in their day.
--from Robert J. Morgan's "Then Sings My Soul," a compilation of hymns and songs with stories/biographies of authors, published in 2011.
