A US rugby international, an Olympic gold medalist, a decorated OSS agent and an alleged Soviet spy. He first came to prominence at Stanford University, where he graduated in geology but found the time to make an impact in various athletic areas. His prowess at rugby saw him picked for the US team which competed in the 1924 Paris Olympics and won the gold medal.

In his work as an engineer he moved around the world, working for a variety of companies, and when WWII was declared he joined up with the Canadian forces and saw a lot of action even before Pearl Harbour was attacked. He was sent to Yugoslavia with the OSS as the liaison officer with Tito, and it is said that his recommendations played a large part in the US directing its military aid to Tito's partisans rather than the anti-communist Chetniks in the fight against the Germans. He subsequently became disillusioned with the in-fighting between the partisans and Chetniks and moved into a role where he was involved in the rescue of allied pilots downed in the Balkans. He was killed while carrying out this role when a plane he was traveling in flew into a mountain in Greece.

Later decrypts of Soviet espionage messages seem to indicate that he was a Soviet agent, but with the archives now closed off again after a brief opening in the 1990s there is a degree of uncertainty as to how substantial this claim is.
