Jeremiah Banning was a 2nd Sergeant under Captain John Comers led the Missouri Mounted Militia, 3rd Division Daviess County, which mustered into duty on Oct. 29, 1838, to engage in the "Mormon War" in Missouri. This unit was discharged on Nov. 3, 1838.

The families of Jeremiah and Matilda Banning, Joseph and Vianah Miller, and George M. Clark migrated from Daviess County, Missouri to Cooke County, Texas in 1853 according to Texas GLO records. Jeremiah was granted 640 acres of land known as the Jeremiah Banning survey. Half or 320 acres is located across from the Joseph Miller survey. Banning was assigned to Clark. They were among the first settlers in Cooke County. According to family history, Jeremiah was a farmer and wheelwright. There are no records of a Confederate pension for Jeremiah.
