Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, he was a left-handed pitcher making his debut with the Philadelphia Athletics on May 14, 1912. For 22 seasons, he played with the Philadelphia Athletics (1912-15), Boston Red Sox (1916-17, 1919-22, 1934) and New York Yankees (1923-33). He was also a member of the World Series Champion Philadelphia Athletics in (1913, 1915-16) and Yankees (1923, 1927-28, 1932). He ended his career with a record of 241 wins, 162 losses, 247 complete games, 35 shutouts, 33 saves, 1,227 strikeouts and a 3.60 earned runs average. He died at age 53 in New York City and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame the same year of his death.
