Rev. Phillip Columbus Croll
Rev Croll was born in Maxatawny township, about 1 ½ miles east of Kutztown October 2, 1852. He is a son of John Croll and Catharine (nee DeLong). The ancestor of his family, Christian Croll, came to this country, 1728. After a course of study where his father moved to, he taught school three terms in White Hall township, Lehigh county. He also spent a term at the Keystone State Normal School, Kutztown. Then he entered Pennsylvania College as a Sophomore, 1873, and graduated in 1876. He entered the Theological Seminary at Gettysburg and graduated from it in 1879. He was ordained the same year. He was pastor of some congregations near Womelsdorf until 1882; of St. Matthew's, Schuylkill Haven until 1892; since then of the Seventh Street church at Lebanon.
He served as secretary and president of his conference and as secretary of East Pennsylvania Synod and as a delegate to the General Synod. He is a member of the Pennsylvania-German Society, and is the editor of the Pennsylvania-German, a monthly magazine. He translated "Jesus and Hillel;" "Jewish Artisan Life;" both from the German of Frank Delitach; Sermon of "The Constitutional Centennial;" "History of St. Matthew's, Schuylkill Haven;" Christian Endeavor Pledge." He is also author of "Tributes to Luther;" The Croll Family;" "Ancient Historic Landmarks in the Lebanon Valley.' Besides articles in magazines and papers; Art Work of Lebanon county; Bible Quiz,etc.
