Major League Baseball Player. He was the game's greatest pitcher in the late 1870s. For National League pennant Champion Boston in 1877-78 he won 40 games each year and then 43 more when Boston finished second in 1879. He is the last pitcher to win 40 games in three consecutive seasons. While doing that he also led the NL in shutouts all three years (26) and ERA and strikeouts two years each. Tom's career record ended at 234 and 163, with a .238 batting average. After his arm finally died in the 1880s he remained in Boston and owned a leather business for decades. He often appeared at big games in the city and was honored several times in "old timer" events. A soft-spoken gentleman, Tom was friends with all fans who remembered his banner days. Professional baseball player 1876-1884. Played for the Hartford Dark Blues, Boston Red Caps, Worcester Ruby Legs, Boston Unions and the Indianapolis Blues. He was also the umpire in the National League in 1883 and 1885.
