Veteran Indiana Publisher Dies at Age of 78 – Active in Religious Work

Funeral services for Charles D. Meigs, 78 years old, who died early yesterday morning at his home, 2248 Central avenue, following an illness of more than a year, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery. He was for more than fifty years associated with publishing houses in Indianapolis and was prominent in religious work. For the last ten years he had been senior member of the Meigs Publishing Company of Indianapolis.

Mr. Meigs was born at Philadelphia, Sept. 20, 1846, and was the son of the late Charles D. Meigs of Indianapolis, and a grandson of Prof. Charles D. Meigs of the Jefferson Medical school at Philadelphia. In 1873 he was married to Anna L. Allen, daughter of the late Rev. A. C. Allen and Elizabeth Allen.

In 1868 he became a bookkeeper in the old Merrill book store, and later became one of a partnership in Merrill, Meigs & Co. He was also manager of the law department of the Bowen-Merrill Company, and a member of the firm. Having sold out his interest in the publishing business to enter more definitely into religious work, Mr. Meigs was made general secretary of the state Sunday school associations. He was for many years on the executive committee of the International Sunday School Association, and serviced as state secretary of both the Indiana and Texas Sunday school associations. He was active in the work of the Y. M. C. A. in its early days in Indianapolis and was associated with the Rev. Thomas C. Horton, George Cobb, Leroy Braden, H. H. Fulton, Lea Munhall and other men prominent in Gospel work. He was a member of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, and chaplain of the Indiana Gideons.

Mr. Meigs is survived by his widow; an adopted daughter, Miss Florence Hubbard, and a sister, Miss Sarah T. Meigs.
