Major League Baseball Player. A native of Frederick, Maryland, Raymond Gardner was a local baseball standout from his youngest years. He began his professional career in 1920, playing five seasons for the Minor League Frederick Hustlers, a member of the Blue Ridge League. In 1926 and 27, he transferred to New Orleans, and then returned to Frederick. In 1929, the Cleveland Indians purchased the Hustlers and renamed the team "The Warriors." Gardner was moved to the Major League in Cleveland, where he was the starting shortstop in 82 games with the Indians in 1929, and 33 games in the 1930 season, batting a .253. In the 1931 season Gardner was returned to the Minor League, where he continued two more seasons as a player and coach. Upon his retirement from baseball, Gardner remained in Frederick, working at the nearby Army Installation, Fort Detrick.
