Born in Harrah, Oklahoma, he was a center fielder nicknamed "Little Poison", weighed only 150 pounds, was an all-around player making his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 12, 1927 and was National League rookie of the year. For 18 seasons, he played with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1927-41, 1944-45), Boston Braves and Cincinnati Reds for part of 1941, Philadelphia Phillies in 1942 and Brooklyn Dodgers in 1944. With the Pirates, he hit over .300 in 10 of his first 12 seasons, won the 1927 NL pennant, batting a .400 average in his first and only World Series and was a selected as a member of the NL All-Star team in 1938. He ended his career with 2,459 hits, 1,201 runs scored, 27 homeruns, 598 runs batted in, a .316 batting average and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. He died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at age 76 and is also the brother of Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player Paul Waner and together they hold the career record for most hits by brothers with a total of 5,611.
