Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Winterset, Iowa, he was a professional baseball player (1894-1915) and a Major League player manager (1897-1915). As a left fielder, he made his debut with the Louisville Colonels on June 30, 1894. For twenty-one seasons, he played with the Louisville Colonels (1894-99), Pittsburgh Pirates (1900-15). During this time, he was also a player-manager for the Louisville Colonels (1897-99) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1900-15), leading the Pirates to four National League pennants (1901-03 and 1909), a World Series Championship win in 1909, with an over all record of 1602 win and 1181 loss. He end his career with a record of 11 seasons with a .300 plus batting average, 2703 hits, 1620 runs scored, 67 homeruns, 1015 batted in and a life time .315 batting average. In 1945, he was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans' Committee as player. He died at age 87 in Winfield, Kansas.
