Rev. Luther, Hymnist, 68, Dies at Home

The Rev. Arthur A. Luther, 68, retired pastor of First Congregational Church of North Collins, died yesterday afternoon in his home, Three Rod Rd., Town of Marilla.
The Rev. Mr. Luther composed about 35 hymns over a 25-year period. His most famous composition, "Jesus Never Fails," has been translated into numerous languages for use in missionary work. His retirement in January, 1957, ended a 21-year pastorate at First Congregational Church. Previously, he was superintendent of the Williamsport (Pa.) City Mission, pastor of the Zanesville (Ohio) United Brethren Church, and coordinator of activities for the Congregational Christian Church in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Until last year, he was a director for 20 years of the Odosagih (NOTE: This spelling is incorrect in the newspaper - Jill Feb. 24, 2016 Bible Conference, an interdenominational organization with facilities at Lime Lake.
Born in the Town of Fairview, Pa, he taught in the public
schools there for two years after graduating from Edinboro (Pa) State Normal School.
In 1916 he married Irena Lehnis (sp. incorrect) of Marilla and began his theological studies at Otterbein College, Westerville, Ohio. He received his bachelor of arts degree there in 1923. Later he was the recipient of an honorary degree of doctor of divinity from the American Bible College in Philadelphia.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Robert A., of Chaffee, and John V., of North Collins; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Palmer, of Marilla, and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 Tuesday in the Marilla Methodist Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Marilla.
